All About The Dyes
All the dyed items that you see at The Hippie Dyer are hand dyed by myself, and because of this, they are all one of a kind items (though designs may be similar).
Due to the nature of the dyeing, there will be colour mixing, occasional colour transfer where I’m not expecting it and colour variation. If you are wanting something ‘perfect’, tie dye may not be for you.
All the dyes I use are Procion MX. These dyes are classed as fibre reactive dyes which are the most permanent of all dye types.
Unlike other dyes, it actually forms a covalent bond with the cellulose or protein molecule. Once the bond is formed, what you have is one molecule, as the dye molecule has become an actual part of the cellulose fiber molecule. This also means that the rest of your washing is safe from the wonderful colours that you can get. If you would like more info on this, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Because of the versatility of the dyes, The Hippie Dyer is able to experiment with lots of cool techniques, including “Pops”, Ice dyes, Wax Resist and much more.
Always willing to push boundaries and try interesting technique, The Hippie Dyer is more than happy to try any ideas you may have, although sometimes – as with most things in life – things don’t always go to plan!
If you would like to find out more about the dyes, the process or any of our products, please don’t hesitate to get in touch – we are always happy to chat! You may also find our FAQ page helpful, as we try and cover some of the most asked questions, lots of curious minds about the wonderful world of tie dye.
Thanks!
